How to Change New Tab Page Search Engine in Microsoft Edge Chromium

Microsoft Edge now allows you to change the search engine for the New Tab page, in addition to the address bar search engine. Microsoft has made this possible starting in Edge Canary 82.0.453.0. Here's how you can change the search engine for the search box on the New Tab page.

Microsoft Edge is now a Chromium-based browser with a number of exclusive features like Read Aloud and services tied to Microsoft instead of Google.

Tip: You can now enable the Tab Search option in Microsoft. Check out this post: Enable Tab Search Feature in Microsoft Edge.

The stable version of Microsoft Edge Chromium is available to the public for a while. The browser has already received a few updates, with support for ARM64 devices in Edge Stable 80. Also, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which has recently reached its end of support. Edge Chromium allows changing the default search engine for the address bar from very first its versions. However, the change doesn't affect the search box on the New Tab Page. Microsoft has finally made it possible.

To Change New Tab Page Search Engine in Microsoft Edge,

  1. pen Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click on the menu button with three dots, or press Alt+F.
  3. Click on the Settings item.
  4. On the left, click on Privacy and services.
  5. On the right, click on Address bar.
  6. On the next page, change Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar to either  "Search box (Bing)" or "Address bar". The address bar option will use your default search engine.
  7. You can also change the default search engine using the option Search engine used in the address bar. You may need to add a few if you don't see the desired search engine in the box.

You are done!

Note: If you do not see the text labels in the left pane in Settings, then try to maximize or resize (enlarge) the Edge window until the left pane appears.

For pre-release versions, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. Microsoft is going to support Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, alongside macOS, Linux (coming in the future) and mobile apps on iOS and Android.
