Edge Chromium Extensions Web Site Is Now Opened for Developers

Microsoft officially opened the new Microsoft Edge Add-ons web-site to submissions to all developers on December 16. Developers can submit extensions via the Partner Center Developer Dashboard.

So, any developer can now submit his extensions in the Partner Center Developer Dashboard. Earlier, this ability has been restricted to a few select developers. By having Chromium under the hood, Edge allows most of the Chromium/Chrome extensions working without modifications. Also, it includes a number of APIs exclusive to Edge, so interested developers can utilize them in their extensions.

Microsoft will no longer be accepting new extensions for the classic EdgeHTML browser. However, they will continue to accept updates for existing 'legacy' extensions. Microsoft encourages developers to update their extensions for Edge Chromium. When users will switch to Edge Chromium, it will try to find the updated extension from the developer and install it automatically instead of the legacy one.

We will migrate users’ extensions from the current version of Microsoft Edge when they update to the new Microsoft Edge (starting January 15th). Extensions will only be migrated for users if they are already available on the Microsoft Edge Addons store at the time of switching to the new browser.

We recommend that developers update your existing EdgeHTML extensions for Chromium and publish them via the new portal as soon as possible, so your existing customers will not face any interruptions when they update to the new Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. The stable channel is also on its way to users. You can find the actual Insider Preview versions at the end of this post. The stable version of Microsoft Edge is expected to be released on on January 15, 2020.
