Yesterday, Microsoft released the first stable version of Microsoft Edge Chromium to the public. Surprisingly, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which has recently reached its end of support.

Earlier, the Redmond software giant decided to follow Chrome's support schedule for Windows 7. As you may remember,  Google promised to support the retired OS for at least 18 months, until July 15th 2021.

Today, the company has updated a support document for Edge Chromium, that reveals that Windows 7 is not the only retired OS which is supported by the newest browser. The list is also includes Windows 10 RS3, which is version 1709.

The document states the following.

Supported Operating Systems for Microsoft Edge

The next version of Microsoft Edge is supported on the following operating systems:

Windows Client

  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10 SAC RS3 and later
  • Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSC
  • Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSC
  • Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC

Windows Server

  • Windows Server 2008 R2**
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2016
  • Windows Server 2019

macOS

  • Sierra(10.12) and later

It is mentioned that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be supported by Microsoft Edge even after those operating systems go out of support. However, IE mode on these operating systems will require the Extended Security Updates for Windows 7.

As for Windows 10 version 1703, Microsoft Edge on this OS should be considered a temporary bridge to getting to a supported OS state. Microsoft recommends upgrading to a newer Windows version that receives updates.

The stable version of Microsoft Edge browser is now available to download. Interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.

For pre-release versions, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. Microsoft is going to support Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, alongside macOS, Linux (coming in the future) and mobile apps on iOS and Android.

  1. Hello Sergey,

Do you have a link to the Microsoft Edge Canary and Microsoft Edge Beta web pages with the exe files?

    Thanks for the help,

    Steve M

  2. Please update all Comment applications to include DATES, not knowing the date of a posting can completely complicate the use of post. DATES should be a basic design requirement. It is very disheartening to see more and more lax in design standards.

    thank you,
