Microsoft made a new announcement about a number of performance improvements made to Edge Chromium browser. In its pre-release versions, the company has enabled new toolchain optimizations that should provide a substantial performance improvement in general browsing workloads.

The engineers have measured an up to 13% performance improvement in the Speedometer 2.0 benchmark when compared to Microsoft Edge 79, the initial stable version of the browser.

Speedometer measures performance by simulating user interactions in a sample web app across a number of DOM APIs and popular JavaScript frameworks used by top sites, and is generally regarded as a good proxy for real-world performance across a number of different subsystems including the DOM, JavaScript engine, layout, and more.

The devs measured Speedometer 2.0 in ten consecutive runs on Microsoft Edge 79 (no optimizations), and Edge 81 (two builds with the new optimization enabled). The browser has been benchmarked on Windows 10 1909 (OS Build 18363.592) on a Microsoft Surface Pro 5 (Intel(R) i5-8250U CPU 1.60GHz and 8 GB RAM), with no other applications running and no additional browser tabs open.

Latest Dev and Canary builds of Edge already include these optimizations, so you can quickly give them a try. Check out the actual browser versions below.

Microsoft recently released the first stable version of Microsoft Edge Chromium to the public. Surprisingly, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which has recently reached its end of support. Interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.

For pre-release versions, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. Microsoft is going to support Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, alongside macOS, Linux (coming in the future) and mobile apps on iOS and Android.
