Microsoft Edge Receives Remove Duplicate Favorites Option

Edge Canary Fluent Big 256 Icon

A new change made its appearance in the Canary branch of Microsoft Edge Chromium. The browser now allows removing duplicate entries from your bookmarks with one click.

After updating the Edge browser to the latest Canary build (see the list of versions below), I have found a new entry in the Favorites toolbar button menu. Here is a screenshot with the Remove Duplicate Favorites menu item:

Clicking on it opens a confirmation dialog. It states that you will be able to review the changes, however, it just directly removed duplicates here, without extra prompts.

As of now, Edge considers an entry as a duplicate only if its name and URL exactly match other entries with the same name and URL. It doesn't remove bookmarks with identical URLs but different names.

Microsoft recently released the first stable version of Microsoft Edge Chromium to the public. Surprisingly, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which has recently reached its end of support. Check out Windows Versions Supported by Microsoft Edge Chromium.

Interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.

For pre-release versions, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. Microsoft is going to support Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, alongside macOS, Linux (coming in the future) and mobile apps on iOS and Android.

  1. And of course it’s complete crap. It ran forever and I had to kill Edge because a) M$ doesn’t understand the concept of big-O or efficiency generally, so no doubt this is an O(n^2) operation, b) M$ doesn’t understand the concept of Quality Assurance and testing under extreme conditions, and c) M$ doesn’t understand the concept of allowing the user to cancel long-running operations,
