How to Enable Quiet Notification Requests in Microsoft Edge Chromium

Following Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge has received an option to show less notifications and reduces the interruptiveness of notification permission requests.  A reworked notification system that suppresses notification requests for certain web sites, especially for sites which try to subscribe you to their notifications without your interaction.

Example: A web site notification in Microsoft Edge.

The change is already available in all Insider Preview channels of the browser, including Beta, Dev, and Canary (see the list of actual versions below). There is a special option, which makes Edge prevent websites from showing notification requests that interrupt you. Here is how to enable it.

To Enable Quiet Notification Requests in Microsoft Edge,

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click on the menu button with three dots, or press Alt+F.
  3. Click on the Settings item.
  4. On the left, click on Site Permissions.
  5. On the right, click on Notifications. You can also open this page directly by entering edge://settings/content/notifications into the address bar.
  6. Turn on the option Quiet notification requests.

You are done.

We can expect this option to appear in the stable branch of the browser pretty soon, once Edge 83  reaches it. As of this writing, Edge 83 is in the Beta channel.

It is worth mentioning that the same feature has been implemented in Google Chrome after the similar option made its appearance in Mozilla Firefox. See this and this for reference.

Microsoft Edge is now a Chromium-based browser with a number of exclusive features like Read Aloud and services tied to Microsoft instead of Google. The browser has already received a few updates, with support for ARM64 devices in Edge Stable 80. Also, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which has recently reached its end of support. Check out Windows Versions Supported by Microsoft Edge Chromium and Edge Chromium latest roadmap. Finally, interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.

For pre-release versions, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. Microsoft is going to support Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, alongside macOS, Linux (coming in the future) and mobile apps on iOS and Android. Windows 7 users will receive updates until July 15, 2021.

  1. I don’t want “less” I wan’t “never”. I don’t like the fact there’s some tiny bit of info on my pc about me telling a specific website no.
