How to Enable QR Code Generator For Page URL in Microsoft Edge Chromium

After Google Chrome, Edge has received the ability to generate a QR code for the URL of an open page. The generated QR code will encode the page URL. It will be possible to read with a compatible device, e.g. with your phone's camera, and share the URL between devices quickly.

The QR code generator is now available in Edge Chromium Canary, because two days ago Edge Chromium has switched to the Chromium 81 code base, which includes the appropriate option. Now both browsers share the same feature.

While we have a flag that allows enabling QR code creation, it is still a work in progress as of this writing. If you are enthusiastic enough to try it in action, here is how to get it. The steps below assume that you have installed the latest Edge Canary (see the version list below).

To Enable QR Code Generator For Page URL in Edge Chromium,

  1. Open Edge Chromium Canary and type the following text in the address bar: edge://flags/#sharing-qr-code-generator.This will open the flags page directly with the relevant setting.
  2. Select the option Enable from the drop-down list next to the 'Enable sharing page via QR Code' line.
  3. Restart Edge by closing it manually. You can also use the Restart button which will appear at the very bottom of the page.
  4. You are done. Now, right-click on an open web page in the browser and select Generate QR code for this page.
  5. You will see this:
  6. Also, there is a button in the address bar.

The generated  QR code can be read with your smartphone, or downloaded.

Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. The stable channel is also on its way to users. You can find the actual Insider Preview versions at the end of this post. The stable version of Microsoft Edge is expected to be released on on January 15, 2020.
