How to Enable Full Screen Window Frame DropDown UI in Microsoft Edge Chromium

Microsoft has silently added a new feature to the modern Chromium-based Microsoft Edge app. When enabled, it adds a drop-down window frame when in full screen mode. Today, we'll see how to activate it.

As of now, Microsoft is using Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) for the Edge browser. It is a procedure used to roll out new features to small randomly selected groups of users so that they can be tested. Based on the feedback and reliability reports from these user groups, Microsoft may expand CFR groups to include more users.

Interested users can force enable this or that feature with a flag. Microsoft ships Edge Chromium with an extended set of hidden options that includes both Chrome flags and options unique to Microsoft Edge.

One of the new flags adds a drop-down window frame to the browser when in full screen. Currently, if you move your mouse pointer to the top of the full screen page, Edge shows a big cross button.

With this new feature, it will display the window frame as a drop-down UI.

Here's how to enable it.

To Enable Full Screen Window Frame Drop Down UI in Microsoft Edge,

  1. Update Edge Chromium to the latest available version (see the list below).
  2. Type edge://flags/#edge-enable-shy-ui into the address bar of Edge.
  3. Set the Enable Fullscreen Dropdown flag to Enabled.
  4. Restart the browser when prompted.
  5. Now make Edge full screen. You can switch to full screen mode just by pressing F11. This works in all browsers, include Microsoft Edge.
  6. Move the mouse pointer to the top of the page. You will get this:

You are done!

Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. The stable channel is also on its way to users. You can find the actual Insider Preview versions at the end of this post. The stable version of Microsoft Edge is expected to be released on on January 15, 2020.
