Edge Chromium for ARM64 Devices is Now Available for Testing

As you may already know, the classic Edge app utilizes the UWP/Store platform, which allowed the app to run on ARM builds of Windows 10 natively. As Microsoft replacing it with the new Chromium-based app, this ability was unavailable until today. The company has compiled its newer Edge browser for ARM64, and made it available for testing.

We're pleased to announce that Microsoft Edge for ARM is now available in the Canary channel! Canary is now built natively for the ARM64 architecture that powers some Windows 10 devices, including the new Surface Pro X. It will soon come to the Dev and Beta channels as well.

The reason behind this move is poor compatibility and performance for browsers running in the 32-bit layer on Windows 10 on ARM. A native web browser app has no such issues.

At the moment of this writing, ARM64 builds are available only in the Canary channel. Beta and Dev are on their way to users.

Microsoft Edge Channels

Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. The stable channel is also on its way to users. You can find the actual Insider Preview versions at the end of this post. The stable version of Microsoft Edge is expected to be released on on January 15, 2020.
