Microsoft teased a new ‘Media Player’ app for Windows 11

In addition to fixing bugs and refining existing features in Windows 11 in preparation for public launch on October 5, Microsoft is working on updating stock apps with new designs and features. The company has already released new versions of Snipping Tool, Alarms, Paint, Mail and Calendar, Calculator, and other apps. It appears that Microsoft is also preparing another application called "Media Player."

A new "Media Player" app briefly appeared during the latest episode of Windows Insiders Podcast (video on YouTube is no longer available). There is no information whether it is a new standalone program or a major upgrade for the existing Movies and TV app, which has not received much love from developers since 2017. Some might also speculate that Microsoft plans to upgrade the classic Windows Media Player app, but there is no solid evidence to believe in such claims.

A screenshot from a video does not reveal many details about the application. We can only spot a new icon, new name, and redesigned player controls with the ability to shuffle a playlist. Teaser videos from Panos Panay also contain the Media Player's icon, further supporting the fact that Microsoft is about to release a new video player for Windows 11.

In case you missed it, Microsoft yesterday released a redesigned classic Paint to Windows Insiders in the Dev channel. The new version contains lots of visual changes and Windows 11-like design pieces. Still, some of the promised features, such as dark theme support and improved dialogs, are missing. Microsoft promises to fix that in upcoming updates. It remains unknown whether the initial release of Windows 11 will contain those updated stock apps Windows insiders are currently testing.

  1. Funny Windows Media Player was never given a facelift update since Windows 7, saving for the Matroska and HEVC support in Windows 10.
