Microsoft Edge Chromium is Coming to Linux

As you may already know, the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge app is currently available for modern Windows versions, including Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, and MacOS. The team behind the browser is now working to bring the app to Linux.

Sean Larkin, a Technical Program Manager on the Edge team, made a post on Twitter, inviting users to participate in a survey regarding Linux and web development. The survey includes a question about the way users expect to install the Edge browser.

Earlier, Microsoft was considering releasing a Linux version of the browser, but it has never gone further than being a hypothetical possibility.

If you are a Linux user, and interested in having Edge on Linux, you can participate in the survey.

While Edge is now available in all pre-release channels, including Beta, Dev, and Canary for all currently supported operating systems, its release date is still not known.

As you may already know, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. The stable channel is also on its way to users.

  1. I might grab it out of curiosity but I have to imagine that the install base on Linux could well be measured in single digits. OK, I’m kidding but it surely wouldn’t be more than a hundred globally. Does anyone even use the evil Chrome when Chromium is easily available for Linux distros as an alternative when necessary? Let’s hope not. :)
