Chromium Edge Now Replaces Classic Edge When Installed

Edge Default Icon 256

A new change is introduced in Windows 10 version 1903. Starting in Windows 10 build 18362.266, the OS hides the classic Edge browser when you install the Chromium-based Edge browser.

Windows 10 build 18362.266 is a cumulative update KB4505903 which Microsoft has released to Insiders in the Release Preview ring. Microsoft has re-released this patch several times. Last time it was released today. As of now, it rises the OS version to build 18362.267.

While Microsoft is not sharing the change log for this update, one of the changes can be easily observed.

Windows 10 Build 18362.266 hides the classic Edge browser when you have both Microsoft Edge Dev/Canary installed.  The classic Edge disappears from the Start menu or Windows Search results once its Chromium-based successor is installed. You can still launch old Edge by typing “microsoft-edge:” in Win + R > Run box.

This is not a news for users who follow the Chromium-based Edge development. There was a hint in build 18936  that Microsoft is about to hide the classic Edge.  See the following post.

It is obvious that Microsoft will eventually remove the classic Edge app from Windows 10. It is not known when this will exactly happen. As of now, the app is only disappears from the user interface but remains available. Also, this is applicable only to Release Preview Ring Insiders.

The new Microsoft Edge browser installs updates automatically. Also, you can manually check for updates by visiting the menu Help > About Microsoft Edge. Finally, you can grab the Edge installer from the following page:
