According to the latest data from Adduplex, in March 2021, Windows 10 20H2 reached almost 30% market share. The latest Windows 10 version gained 9.9 points in a single month, which is quite impressive, considering Microsoft no longer forces fresh updates unless your PC runs an outdated release. Windows 10 20H2 has no significant new features and overall feels like a regular monthly patch, so there are even fewer reasons to rush the update.
If you are still using Windows 10 versions released before 2020, prepare for upcoming forced updates. You can read more about what is new in Windows 10 2004 and 20H2 here and here.
Despite a significant 1.5 times jump in March 2021, Windows 10 20H2 remains the second most popular Windows version. Windows 10 2004 holds the king of the hill title with an impressive 42.1%. In March 2021, this release gained 0.3 points, up from 41.9% in February 2021.
Windows 10 20H2's gains came from older out-of-support versions. Windows 10 1909 lost 8.4 points, down to 18.4% from 26.8%; Windows 10 1903 lost 1.2 points. Older releases, such as Windows 10 1809, 1804, and 1709 experienced no significant changes in March 2021, with an overall audience slightly above 1%.
As for Windows Insiders, their number grew from 0.3% to 0.5%. Windows 10 21H1 is currently available to more Insiders in more channels, hence the spike.
You can compare the growth rates of different Windows 10 versions on the chart below. It clearly shows how Microsoft has become more careful with Windows 10 releases after the fiasco with October 2018 Update.
Adduplex gathers its data from approximately 80,000 PCs with apps that contain Adduplex SDK. Considering more than a billion devices are running different Windows 10 versions, Adduplex's data leaves quite a significant margin for error. Still, this is the only data that somehow represents the Windows 10 market fragmentation. Microsoft does not provide any official statistics about Windows 10 usage, so users and developers need to work with reports similar to those from Adduplex.
