Windows 12 will not support ARM32 apps

At the Build 2023 event, Microsoft revealed that forthcoming Qualcomm Oryon processors and the next iteration of Windows, unofficially widely dubbed "Windows 12", will not be compatible with apps designed for the ARM32 architecture. This decision is reasonable, given that most programs have already adopted ARM64, with the remaining few running through x86 emulation.

According to rumors, the next major release of the client version of Windows will take place in the fall of 2024, which means that ARM32 support may be removed in it. Qualcomm Oryon processors are also due out in 2024.

Microsoft has not yet revealed the official name of the next version of the operating system, but it is assumed that it will be called Windows 12.

ℹ️ Qualcomm Oryon processors will be built on technologies from Nuvia, which Qualcomm acquired earlier this year.

However, it is worth noting that Arm Ltd. accuses Qualcomm of violating licensing agreements and trademark rights.

If the deal is completed, it would assist Qualcomm in producing more robust desktop processors. There is an expectation that Qualcomm Oryon would be able to rival Apple's M-series processors.

  1. I haven’t used Windows on ARM, but very into it with SBC’s and Linux. I’ve been fiddling with RPi for 10 years now and still think it’s fun.

However, I have started a bit with other SBC’s. Last purchase was a Radxa Rock 5B:

Much faster, however, the software is not as good yet. Hopefully it will catch up. Armbian is the best I’ve tested on Radxa Rock 5B so far.
