Windows 10 Version 1809 Causes Font Issues

In addition to audio and data loss issues (issue #1, issue #2), Windows 10 October 2018 Update is causing font issues for a number of users. The fonts appear broken in Settings and third-party apps like Foobar2000.

There are a number of reports on Reddit that show the broken font rendering in Windows 10 version 1809 October 2018 Update. Here are some screenshots.

The broken fonts in Settings:

The missing 'star' symbol in Foobar2000 for the rating value:

Windows 10 Font Issue Foobar 2000 01 It appears that Windows 10 version 1809 has font substitution or font fallback issues where the operating system fails to replace the missing characters from one font with another.

Thankfully, this issue can be fixed. Affected users can try to update their drivers. Here are some helpful links:

To fix the font issue, download the latest driver version available for your video card and install it. If you already have the latest driver installed, uninstall the installed driver and install it once again.

It looks like the driver update changes the font cache and updates the font fallback settings, so everything goes back to normal.

Unfortunately, it is not known yet when the fixed version of the OS will include a patch for this issue. If you are already on Windows 10 version 1809, it might be a good idea to rollback the upgrade and go back to a previous Windows version until all the issues are discovered and fixed.

  1. Hello Sergey, this does not refer to this post of yours, but I don’t see any other way to ask you a question. So, if you don’t mind, would you explain to me how do I get WinX Menu Editor to make the windows 10 right-click menu display items in alphabetical order? Thank you in advance.

    1. In short:
Try to sort the items manually with Win+X Menu editor using the blue buttons on the right

Alternatively, rename its shortcuts manually with file explorer and then run hashlnk

  2. здравствуйте, сергей!

  3. You can also change the Font to a different one also by editing
the line where I have “Choco cooky Regular”
it has to be the same exact name as written in your C:\Windows\Fonts folder
so if you wanted Arial the last line would be

    “Segoe UI”=”Arial”

after a reboot the font should be changed.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts]
    “Segoe UI (TrueType)”=””
    “Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)”=””
    “Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)”=””
    “Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)”=””
    “Segoe UI Light (TrueType)”=””
    “Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)”=””
    “Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)”=””

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes]

    “Segoe UI”=”Choco cooky Regular”
