Microsoft continues transforming the Office app on mobile platforms into a universal all-in-one productivity-oriented program. The app already supports tons of features, previously available in individual apps. For example, you can open any Office file, create and edit PDF, scan images, business cards, whiteboards, and QR codes, create forms, and even sharpen your presentation skills with an AI-based coach. The latest update on Android brings another welcomed addition to the Office app: Voice memos with automatic transcription.
With voice memos in the Office app, you can ditch dedicated apps for this task. Dictating will be useful in situations when you cannot type important information, thoughts, or ideas. The best thing about this feature is that it can automatically transcribe your voice memos and turn them into editable text. Moreover, the app can recognize different speakers and format the text accordingly. Once you finish recording a voice memo, the app allows editing the transcribed text. You can correct errors, add more information, or move the note to another app or document.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Microsoft brings voice memos to its Office apps. Last year, the company announced smart dictation in Word for Microsoft 365 subscribers. Now, users can access the similar feature for free in the Office app for Android.
Currently, voice memos is only available in Office Beta for Android. There is no official word from Microsoft regarding the new feature and its broad availability. If you want to check out voice memos in the Office app, go to the app's page in the Google Play Store and enroll your device in the beta testing program. Fortunately, unlike iOS, you do not need an invitation to participate. iOS-version of the Office app is available via this link in the App Store.
