Microsoft Office to get a new theme along with new font in September

In the coming month, Microsoft Office applications will receive updates to their themes, introducing new color schemes, styles, and outlines. Additionally, the default font will be changed from Calibri to Aptos (previously known as Bierstadt). This marks the first change in default font since Office 2007.

According to Microsoft, the new theme aims to enhance contrast and improve readability in Office documents. The color scheme will see noticeable changes such as the replacement of yellow with dark green and light blue with dark teal.

In Word and Outlook, styles will be updated to give a more modern and professional appearance. Headings, for example, will have a larger font size and increased boldness, while paragraphs will have improved spacing.

Aptos, the new default font, will be implemented in applications like Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel, replacing Calibri after more than 15 years. This font change will be accompanied by modifications to the default style and color palette used in documents.

Some members of the Microsoft 365 Insiders program have already had the opportunity to evaluate the new themes and default font in Office apps. These changes are expected to become available to all Microsoft 365 subscribers in September.

Microsoft initiated testing of these updates with Microsoft 365 Insiders in July, and now plans to rollout the changes to all users in September.
