Microsoft has announced that the Aptos font, also known as Bierstadt, will be the default font in the Microsoft Office family of applications. This is a grotesque sans-serif typeface inspired by mid-20th century Swiss typography. You may remember that since Office 2007, the default font has been Calibri.
Today we begin the final phase of this major change where Aptos will start appearing as the new default font across Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel for hundreds of millions of users. And, over the next few months it will roll out to be the default for all our customers. We can’t wait for Aptos to be readily available since it was crafted to embody the many aspects of the human experience.

Aptos was created by lead typeface designer Steve Matteson. He created the Segoe font, which has been used by default in the interface of the operating system since Windows Vista. Matteson also contributed to the development of key Windows TrueType fonts. The Bierstadt typeface has been renamed Aptos after Matteson's favorite place in Santa Cruz, California.
Although Aptos will become the default font, Calibri will still be pinned to the top of the drop-down menu with a list of available fonts along with its predecessors Times New Roman and Arial.
The Grandview, Seaford, Skeena and Tenorite fonts introduced back in 2021 will also remain available in all Microsoft Office applications.
