Microsoft confirms even more printing issues in Windows 11 and 10

Microsoft has been busy fixing numerous printing issues in Windows 10 and 11, plaguing regular and business customers. While some printers manufacturers still investigate compatibility problems on Windows 11, Microsoft solved most of the known printing-related bugs in the latest cumulative updates. Unfortunately, the story about buggy printing in Windows 10 and 11 is not over, as even more issues continue showing up.

Microsoft has updated the official update history for the recent KB5006674 (Windows 11, build 22000.258) and KB5006670 (Windows 10, builds 19041.1288, 19042.1288, and 19043.1288), adding one entry in the known issues section. According to the documentation, after installing cumulative updates, users might encounter the following errors when connecting to a remote printer shared on a Windows print server.

Printing error codes

  • 0x000006e4 (RPC_S_CANNOT_SUPPORT).

  • 0x0000007c (ERROR_INVALID_LEVEL).

  • 0x00000709 (ERROR_INVALID_PRINTER_NAME).

The newly discovered issue affects client and server Windows, versions 7 SP1, 8.1, 10 (1607, 1809, 1909, 2004, 20H2, 21H1), and 11. It is worth mentioning that home users are unlikely to encounter the errors listed above, as home computers do not use print servers.

Microsoft is currently investigating the bug and working on a fix in an upcoming release. Meanwhile, affected users can apply recommended workarounds to curb the issue. System administrators can find instructions for Windows 11 here, Windows 10 21H1 here, Windows 10 20H2 here, and Windows 10 2004 here.

In case you missed it, several days ago, Microsoft released an optional cumulative update for Windows 11, fixing most of the known bugs and annoying issues. Those include performance degradations on AMD Ryzen-based computers. AMD, on its side, pushed an updated chipset driver for AM4 and TRX40 motherboards that solves the problem with CPPC (scenarios, when a motherboard detects the most powerful core and assigns demanding tasks to it).

Microsoft tracks known bugs in Windows 11 and Windows 10 on the official Microsoft Docs website. You can follow updates there using this link for Windows 10 and this link for Windows 11.
