Today's Beta version of the Microsoft Authenticator app on iOS and Android received a new feature that makes managing passwords significantly easier. With the new version, you can import passwords directly from Google Chrome or a CSV file to your Microsoft Account. Although the update is available for both Android and iOS, Microsoft is yet to announce the password import feature and all the details about how it works or when it will be available for public use.
Microsoft Authenticator is a multi-function two factor authentication (2FA) app. It allows using your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN as a second layer of security in this two step verification process. After you’ve signed in with two factor authentication (2FA), you’ll have access to all your Microsoft products and services, such as Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and more.
In fact, it can be used with any other service as it is able to generate one time passwords (OTP). The app supports the industry standard for time based one time passwords (TOTP), so you can secure all your online accounts. The one time passwords (OTP codes) have a 30 second timer counting down. The one time password (OTP) doesn’t require you to be connected to a network as it works offline.
Import passwords into Microsoft Authenticator
Today's Beta for Android supports importing passwords directly from Google Chrome. Additionally, you can import passwords from a .CSV file, which is a special text file format supported by plenty of password managers for import and export operation.
Tip: You can enable Autofill in Microsoft Authenticator.
The current stable version works as a simple authenticator for different accounts but in the nearby future Microsoft will transform it into a more capable password manager. You will be able to securely store your passwords, view them, and autofill them in different apps both on iOS and Android. This feature is currently in beta and not available to all users.
Microsoft Authenticator cannot offer a vast number of features you can find in third-party password managers (for example, there is no password generator of any kind or data leak check) but is available completely for free on on iOS and Android.
