Disable VPN While Roaming In Windows 10

This article explains how to enable or disable VPN while roaming in Windows 10. This change will affect all user accounts of your computer. You can use either an option in Settings or a Registry tweak.

Virtual private networks (VPNs) are point-to-point connections across a private or public network, such as the Internet. A VPN client uses special TCP/IP or UDP-based protocols, called tunneling protocols, to make a virtual call to a virtual port on a VPN server. In a typical VPN deployment, a client initiates a virtual point-to-point connection to a remote access server over the Internet. The remote access server answers the call, authenticates the caller, and transfers data between the VPN client and the organization's private network. See the following articles:

To disable VPN while roaming in Windows 10, do the following.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Click Network & Internet -> VPN.
  3. On the right, find the Advanced Options category.
  4. Now, disable the Allow VPN while roaming option and you are done.

There is an alternative way to enable or disable this feature. You can apply a simple Registry tweak. Ready-to-use Registry files are available below.

Disable VPN While Roaming in Windows 10 using Registry

You must sign in as Administrator before proceeding.

  1. Open the Registry Editor app.
  2. Go to the following Registry key.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\Parameters\Config\VpnCostedNetworkSettings

  3. On the right, modify or create a new 32-Bit DWORD value "NoRoamingNetwork". Set it to 1 do disable the feature. Otherwise, you need to delete the value or set its value data to 0.
    Note: Even if you are running 64-bit Windows you must still create a 32-bit DWORD value.

    1. This options is for LTE/SIM devices mostly. But yes, it is available on regular devices without a SIM card.
