Windows February 2024 Updates kill the taskbar

Some users experienced the taskbar disappearing or crashing after installing the Windows 10 KB5034763 and Windows 11 KB5034765 February 2024 updates . Microsoft is investigating reports of the issue.

Windows 11 Desktop

After installing Windows 10 KB5034763, one user found that icons for Windows Security, Sound, Network, and other features were missing from the taskbar.

Additionally, pinned applications would not load. Similar issues were reported by users in the Feedback Hub and support forums, including problems with app icons not appearing, delays in loading the taskbar, and difficulties entering the PIN on the login screen.

Some users on Reddit discovered that uninstalling Windows 11 KB5034765 could solve the problem temporarily, but this may not be a long-term solution as the security update includes important bug fixes. Restarting Explorer, running DISM, SFC, and adjusting registry settings were unsuccessful in resolving the bug.

However, reinstalling the update or creating a new user account may help some users. As a last resort you can try to uninstall the problematic update and pause updates for a while.
