Microsoft has released a new Visual Studio Code version 1.54. February update is available with several improvements for those using this excellent free code editor from Microsoft.
The most significant change in Visual Studio Code 1.54 is native Apple Silicon support. With the latest version, owners of the M1-based Macs can enjoy better performance, faster startup, and better battery life. Previously, Visual Studio Code used Rosetta 2 emulation layer to convert its x86 code to ARM.
Visual Studio Code for macOS is now available as a native universal build for both Intel and Apple Silicon-based Macs. When a user downloads the installation file, it automatically detects the architecture and unpacks the necessary files. Besides, users can download architecture-specific builds which are smaller compared to the universal package.
Visual Studio Code is the latest addition to the company's apps that natively support Apple Silicon. Now, popular multi-platform apps from Microsoft such as Office, Edge, and Visual Studio fully support Apple’s M1 Macs.

- Accessibility improvements. Better word navigation on Windows and roles for views and buttons.
- Persistent terminal processes. Local terminal processes are restored on window reload.

- Timeline view improvements. Compare changes across Git history timeline entries.
- Auto reload Notebooks. Notebooks automatically reload when their file changes on disk.
- Remote ports table view. Remote ports now shown in a table widget.
- Brackets extensions. Use Brackets keyboard shortcuts in VS Code.
