Microsoft updates Surface Pro X lineup with Windows 11-optimized firmware

Microsoft released a new firmware update for its ARM-based Surface Pro tablets. January 2021 update for Surface Pro X (first-gen), Surface Pro X with SQ2 processors, and Surface Pro X (Wi-Fi, the latest model) brings improved Windows 11 support and various enhancements.

What is new in January 2021 firmware update for Surface Pro X?

Here is the changelog for the latest firmware update available for all three generations of Surface Pro X:

  • Surface Pro X (Wi-Fi, the newest model) only: camera stability and performance improvements.
  • Graphics stability and performance improvements.
  • System stability and performance improvements in Windows 11.
  • Support for the new Surface Slim Pen charger.

January 2021 firmware update for Surface Pro X is available on devices with Windows 10 20H1 (May 2020 Update) and newer. On Surface Pro X (Wi-Fi), the update is available only on Windows 11 (the computer runs Windows 11 out of the box).

Microsoft says there are no known issues in January 2021 firmware update for Surface Pro X. Still, users need to keep in mind that Microsoft does not allow uninstalling firmware updates on Surface devices.

You can download fresh patches and improvements for your Surface Pro X from Windows Update. Microsoft also allows downloading updates for manual installation from the official Surface Support website, but that option is not available for ARM-based Surface computers.
