Microsoft updates Edge Web Widget with Windows 11-styled UI

ease looms over the horizon, Microsoft prepares its application to look on par with the latest operating system. Office Insiders are currently testing redesigned Office apps, and many stock Windows 11 programs now offer fresh looks and new features. Microsoft Edge is also on track to get some of the Windows 11-like UIs. After introducing a new flag to enable new transparency effects in Edge, Microsoft refreshed Web Widget with the same fresh coat of paint.

A slightly redesigned Web Widget is currently available for Edge Insiders in the Canary Channel. To check out the new widget, you need to turn on the "Enable Windows 11 Visual Updates" flag on the edge://flags page.

You can compare the appearance of the widget before and after the visual update.

Web Widget in Microsoft Edge has been around since Edge 88, but it remains unavailable to all users in the stable channel. In a nutshell, Web Widget is identical to the new Widgets UI in Windows 11. It provides users with the latest updates about weather, news, stocks, sports events, etc. What makes Web Widget more useful is the ability to add any website to keep it around. Microsoft Edge lets you pin Web Widget to the side of the screen, providing users with quick access to the news feed or favorite websites. You can also find similar capabilities in the Vivaldi browser and its "Side Panel" feature.

Although the refreshed UI in Web Widget looks beautiful on Windows 11, there is some room for improvements. For example, we encountered lots of visual glitches and flashing when moving the widget around. Microsoft might fix the problems before promoting the refreshed Web Widgets to more stable channels, such as Dev or Beta.

To avoid graphic issues on your machine after upgrading to Windows 11 (the OS will be available for the public on October 5, 2021), we recommend installing the latest Windows 11-optimized drivers from NVIDIAAMD, or Intel, depending on which GPU you use.
