Microsoft is looking to acquire Discord for $10 billion

Unsuccessful attempts to buy TikTok and Pinterest did not discourage Microsoft, which is one of the world's most valuable companies, from looking for another promising acquisition. Recently, Microsoft bought ZeniMax Media, the parent company of famous game publishers, such as Bethesda Softworks, Arkane Studios, and Machine Games. Now, Bloomberg reports that the software giant wants to buy a popular gaming chat service, Discord.

According to the sources, Microsoft offers more than $10 billion for Discord, which is around $3 billion more than Discord's current market value. Several months ago, when Microsoft was in talks to obtain TikTok, the company officially confirmed rumors about the potential acquisition.

This time Microsoft neither confirmed nor denied fresh rumors about the Discord deal. However, Bloomberg reports that Microsoft's Phil Spencer is now finalizing the deal. It is also worth mentioning that Microsoft is not the only potential buyer. Epic Games and Amazon are also on the list of those interested in acquiring a popular chat service. VentureBeat reports that Discord has already sealed the deal, which means you can expect the official announcement from the respective companies.

What is Discord

Discord is a free multiplatform chat service primarily focused on gaming audience and streamers. It was one of many serviced that significantly boosted their audience during the pandemic in 2020. Currently, Discord has approximately 140 million monthly active users. The service's primary income source is the Nitro subscription ($9.99 per month or $99.99 per year) that offers several advanced features and benefits. With Discord Nitro, users get additional emojis, bigger file upload support, profile badges, and improved streaming quality. There is also a cheaper $4.99 per month tier with fewer perks.
