Microsoft Editor is now built-in into the Edge browser

Microsoft Word and Outlook have a built-in extension for advanced spelling and grammar correction called "Microsoft Editor." Those not using Office apps and not paying for the Microsoft 365 subscription can still use Microsoft Editor in their browser: the company offers the Microsoft Editor extension for Chromium-based browsers, such as Edge or Chromium.

If you prefer Microsoft Edge over Chrome or other browsers, you will be glad to know that the browser of your choice now has one more built-in feature to make the user experience better. Microsoft Edge users no longer need to download the Microsoft Editor extension for grammar and spelling correction in what they type on various websites.

Edge built-in Microsoft Editor

Microsoft announced the change on the official Microsoft Edge Insider website. For now, a built-in Microsoft Editor extension is available for users in the United States with the English language set as the primary in Edge. Moreover, it requires downloading either Dev or Canary release, as Microsoft wants to test the waters before shipping the integration to all Edge users.

After installing and enabling Microsoft Editor in Edge, you will notice that the browser highlights grammar and spelling mistakes with a traditional red squiggly line and various suggestions with a blue line. Clicking a suggestion reveals the list of possible fixes or alternatives.

For many, the regular Microsoft Editor extension from the Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons Store will remain a better option for quite some time. The extension supports 21 languages and additional premium features available to users with an active Microsoft 365 Subscription. Of course, Microsoft will bring more languages to the built-in editor in the Edge browser in the future.

  1. This Editor cr~~ is annoying as hell in Hotmail/Outlook. It constantly annoyed me with suggestions. Finally turned off all text predictions and grammar checking in Microsoft Editor Settings.
