Reportedly, Microsoft allows select enterprise customers to use Office 365 apps on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud without any additional cost. Previously, Microsoft had introduced licensing terms that increased the cost of running their software on other cloud services.
The updated rules, effective from August 1, 2023, offer different terms for AWS users compared to customers of Google and Alibaba. Previously, these customers had to pay higher fees to run Microsoft software outside of Azure.
Under the new rules, users with specific licenses, such as Microsoft 365 E3/E5/A3/A5 and Microsoft 365 Business Premium, can run Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise and business, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Visio on Amazon WorkSpace.
However, it's worth noting that analyst Wes Miller suggests that running Microsoft office programs on Azure will still be cheaper than on Amazon WorkSpace.
To use WorkSpace, enterprises will require a Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 subscription for each user accessing the software. It's important to mention that Microsoft 365 E3+ is needed, even if users don't require EMS (Enterprise Mobility + Security). Additionally, WorkSpaces users will require a Virtual Desktop Access license.
