Intel Rapid Storage (Intel RST) Driver Prevents Update to Windows 10 version 1903

As you may remember, Microsoft has postponed public rollout of Windows 10 version 1903 '19H1' on April 4, 2019. By shifting the release from April to May, the company has allotted more time for testing. Also, there was a number of conditions Microsoft has defined to prevent certain PCs from upgrade to the latest feature update. One of them is Intel Rapid Storage (Intel RST) drivers.

If you are trying to update to the Windows 10 May 2019 Feature Update (Windows 10, version 1903), you may encounter an update compatibility hold and receive the message, "Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST): The inbox storage driver iastora.sys doesn’t work on these systems and causes stability problems on Windows. Check with your software/driver provider for an updated version that runs on this version of Windows."

Microsoft and Intel have found that the drivers of version 15.5.2.1054 or higher are compatible and won't prevent you from the upgrade. If you are affected by this driver issue, it is recommended to install the RST driver version 15.9.6.6.1044 released on March 18, 2019.

Also, there is another issue that may stop you from upgrading to  Windows 10 1903. With  KB4497935 released in May 2019, devices that use MIT Kerberos Realms and have joined a domain can no longer sign in. "Devices that are domain controllers or members are both affected."

You can check it in the Registry:

HKLM \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System \ Kerberos \ MitRealms

Or you can check the state of "Define Interoperable Kerberos v5 realm settings" in the Group Policy Editor under Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates> System -> Kerberos. Microsoft is about to resolve this issue with an update in August.

The list of resolved issues in Windows 10 version 1903 can be found HERE.

  1. Hello to all,

Waiting now for some time to upgrade my HP Home PC (HP Pavilion 570-p016nf) to 1903, all other machines in the family got it installed for two to three months.

It finally decided to start, but stopped on this error. I downloaded the latest Intel RST driver, installed it, rebooted the PC twice after removing former driver, but STILL Windows upgrade STOPS with the same message:
“The inbox storage driver iastora.sys doesn’t work on ….”
    So what ???

    Thanks for any help.
    Jame
