By default in Firefox the bookmarks toolbar appears on every open tab in the browser. You can toggle enable it with Ctrl + Shift + B, or show/hide using the browser's menu. What many users want is to have the bookmarks bar appear on the new tag page only, similar to what Google Chrome has. Here's how it can be done.

The bookmarks bar in Firefox, when enabled, appears on every tab, including the currently open one, and on the new tab page.

One can toggle enable the bookmarks bar with a hotkey, Ctrl+Shift+B. Also, you can right-click the window frame next to the tab bar and check/uncheck the Bookmarks Toolbar entry from the menu.

Besides the title bar right-click option, you can now use the main menu of Firefox (appears when you press the Alt key) for the same. You need to click on View > Toolbars > Bookmarks toolbar. See the following screenshot.

Also, you can directly change how the bookmarks toolbar will appear, e.g. to show it only on the new tab page. You can even omit the menu enablement option explained above by using another value for that.

Directly change the bookmarks bar visibility in Firefox

The Bookmarks menu toolbar changes a value in the Firefox configuration. It actually writes your choice to the browser.toolbars.bookmarks.visibility configuration option. You can check it in about:config.

Browser Toolbars Bookmarks Visibility

By setting the browser.toolbars.bookmarks.visibility value to newtab you will make it appear on the new tab page only. The other values you can set are

  • always - always show the bookmarks toolbar.
  • never  - disable the toolbar.
  • newtab - only show the bookmarks toolbar on the new tab page.

Summary

If you are using Firefox 84, you can now make its bookmarks bar appear on the new tab page only. You can either enable a menu option for your convenience, or set the toolbar visibility in about:config directly for one-time action. Whichever method you use, both will allow you to achieve the desired result. It is a nice improvement made to Firefox, which many users were looking for years.
