Here are some details about Hypnotix IPTV app in Linux Mint 20.1

The team behind the Linux Mint distro are expecting to release Linux Mint 20.1 during this holiday season, so they are sharing more details on what the new Hypnotix IPTV player app will include.

Hypnotix is an IPTV player from Linux Mint,  an exciting project that allows watching IPTV streams on Linux without a hassle. In November 2020 Hypnotix has got a preferences screen where you can now configure multiple TV providers:

These providers can be configured via a local M3U playlists, remote M3U URLs or the Xtream API.

Some settings were also added to let you set MPV options, an HTTP user agent and an HTTP referrer:

Hypnotix can handle live TV channels but also VOD libraries for movies and TV series.

Depending on the provider, content can be organized by categories:

You can then select your TV channel on the left and watch it on the right, or go full screen:

VOD (Movies and Series) work slightly differently. Once you select a category you can see all of its content:

Hypnotix fetches IMDb information for the movie or series you want to watch:

To make it easy to browse, episodes within TV Series are organized by seasons:

There’s a lot more we can do with Hypnotix going forward such as:

  • EPG support (Live TV Program)
  • PVR (pausing, time-shifting, recording…etc)
  • Custom categories
  • Favorites
  • Hiding unused content

  1. I’m running Elementary OS 5.1.7 based on Ubuntu 18.04 and I wanted to try out, so I downloaded Hypnotix 1.1 from https://github.com/linuxmint/hypnotix and installed it. Then it said it depends on python 3, which I installed. After Python3 I re-installed Hypnotix. It is now visible in the menu under Sound and Video.
    When I click on it it shows in Dock as an icon and dissapears after about 15 seconds. When I click on the icon in Dock, it bounces once and then disappears. In system monitor I can see that hypnotix.py starts from /usr/bin/python3 /usr/lib/hypnotix/hypnotix.py (yes that is a space behind python3).

    When I run hypnotix from the terminal I see the following:
    aryan@pc:~$ hypnotix
    aryan@pc:~$ Traceback (most recent call last):
    File “/usr/lib/hypnotix/hypnotix.py”, line 24, in
    import mpv
    File “/usr/lib/hypnotix/mpv.py”, line 567, in
    _handle_func(‘mpv_render_context_create’, [MpvRenderCtxHandle, MpvHandle, POINTER(MpvRenderParam)], c_int, ec_errcheck, ctx=None)
    File “/usr/lib/hypnotix/mpv.py”, line 478, in _handle_func
    func = getattr(backend, name)
    File “/usr/lib/python3.6/ctypes/__init__.py”, line 361, in __getattr__
    func = self.__getitem__(name)
    File “/usr/lib/python3.6/ctypes/__init__.py”, line 366, in __getitem__
    func = self._FuncPtr((name_or_ordinal, self))
    AttributeError: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmpv.so.1: undefined symbol: mpv_render_context_create
    [end of Terminal]

    Nothing shows up in the system monitor, nor in the Dock.

    I’ve searched hundreds of sites. Some other people experience same or similar behavior, but none leads to solutions… Any clues someone?
    Thanks

  2. I just noticed that parts of the text copied from the terminal disappears. text between hooks (on the , and . keys) disappears when I submit it. I guess it has something to do with the formatting of the web page. How do I add a screen shot?

  3. How about running this hyptonix in linux mint 19.2 kernel 4.15.0-70 generic(tina) HDD40gb and 2gb ram? Hangs the system?
