Edge Chromium is now available on Xbox

In March 2021, Microsoft stopped supporting the original Edge browser the company shipped alongside the initial release of Windows 10. Chromium-based Edge replaced Edge Legacy, providing users with better compatibility, more features, faster updates, and cross-platform support (Edge Chromium works on Windows 7, 8, 10, 11, macOS, and Linux). The only devices stuck with Edge Legacy were Xbox consoles. After a couple of months of testing with Xbox Insiders, Microsoft is now ready to replace ancient Edge Legacy with Chromium-based Edge.

The new Edge for Xbox consoles is available as a part of the September 2021 software update. And while a browser might not be the most popular app on consoles, users will enjoy a better browser with improved compatibility, new syncing capabilities, and mouse support.

The September 2021 update for Xbox brings several minor improvements to the dashboard. Users can now add games from the Xbox Game Pass catalog to a wishlist to play later and not lose them. Also, Microsoft now allows Xbox owners stream games from their consoles to Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, plus play games from the cloud on computers. To access those features, you need to install the latest update for the Xbox app on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

It is worth mentioning that Microsoft is not giving up on supporting Xbox One Series. Although the newest Xbox Series X|S consoles are one year old, Microsoft continues shipping games, software updates, and new features to Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox Series X. Some of the new capabilities are not available on the previous-gen Xboxes due to older hardware, but other features, such as Chromium-based Edge, work without issues.
