Dark Mode is coming to Google desktop search

Google desktop search is on track to become the latest web service to adopt a dark mode. The company confirmed that it is currently testing a dark mode on desktop computers.

According to The Verge, the website will automatically turn on Dark mode when your PC or Mac switches to a dark theme in Chrome. Instead of bright white eye-burning background, Google search will change to a more comfortable dark gray color. 9to5Google also reports that users will have an option to change the Google Search search appearance options manually.

Google Search Dark Mode

Google is not ready to roll out this update globally. Dark mode support for search on a desktop currently goes through limited testing in the US only. Google says they "do not have anything specific to announce right now," but the company is always testing new features to improve user experience.

Some users already noticed dark mode in Google searches back in January, so it's unclear when we can expect this feature to appear. It is part of A/B testing, and there is no official way to turn it on manually. Until Google releases dark mode for everyone, you can use a browser extension like Dark Reader which enables the dark theme support on any website, whether it can offer native dark mode or not. It is available for any mainstream browser for free (except for Safari on macOS, where it is available for $4.99).

More and more companies roll out dark mode support for their operating system, apps, and websites. A couple of days ago, Microsoft started rolling out a dark theme for OneDrive for Web. Also, the company announced enhanced dark mode for Word.
