As you can see in the video above, the feature reminds of the good old classic Opera 12, which has the similar tab bar. Also, the classic EdgeHTML has the same option out of the box. Google is adopting this feature from Chrome OS to Chromium, so it is already available in the latest Canary build of Google Chrome.

Google Chrome comes with a number of useful options which are experimental. They are not supposed to be used by regular users but enthusiasts and testers can easily turn them on. These experimental features can significantly improve the user experience of the Chrome browser by enabling additional functionality. To enable or disable an experimental feature, you can use hidden options called 'flags'.

As of now,  to get WebUI Tab Strip available in the user interface of Google Chrome Canary, you have to enable free flags.

  • chrome://flags/#webui-tab-strip
  • chrome://flags/#webui-tab-strip-demo-options
  • chrome://flags/#top-chrome-touch-ui

The last flag is not related to the WebUI Tab Strip, but it is required to be enabled, as WebUI Tab Strip only works with the touch UI in its current implementation.

The steps below assume that you have installed Google Chrome Canary.

To Enable WebUI Tab Strip in Google Chrome,

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser.
  2. Type the following text in the address bar: chrome://flags/#webui-tab-strip.
  3. Select Enabled from the drop-down list next to the WebUI tab strip flag.Enable WebUI Tab Strip UI In Google Chrome

  1. It has potential. Not as useful/fast as scrollable tabstrip. On 96.4xxxx do not have demo flag but it works with touch and webui tabstrip enabled… sort of as the scrolling is terrible with mouse.
