Xbox app devs can now use the Edge rendering engine WebView2

Microsoft has introduced an ability for Xbox app developers to enhance their applications by integrating components of the Chromium-based version of Edge. They can now use the Microsoft Edge WebView2 that adds cutting-edge web technologies to Xbox apps, resulting in improved performance.

One of the early adopters of WebView2 is the STARZ streaming app, and it is anticipated that more apps will embrace this technology in the upcoming months.

WebView2 is part of the Chromium-based Edge rendering engine that replaces the outdated EdgeHTML. By using this WebView2 control, developers can seamlessly embed web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript into their Xbox apps. This improvement paves the way for HTML5 games to come to Xbox in the future.

Furthermore, Microsoft has also mentioned MakeCode, an online platform that offers free computer education opportunities. Thanks to the integration of WebView2 control, MakeCode includes built-in games, enabling kids to learn coding and create their very own video games.
