Windows 11 now shows Snap Groups in Alt + Tab and Taskbar previews

One of the great improvements in Windows 11 is window management. When you move some app to a screen edge, the OS offers you up to 6 layouts to arrange other windows. Now, Windows 11 Dev builds reflect those layouts in Alt + Tab and in the Taskbar preview thumbnails.

In the latest Windows 11 Dev build, you will clearly see what Snap Groups you have. When you switch between the running apps, Task View displays them with a special preview thumbnail containing the group and its layout.

The same is applicable to the taskbar. When you hover over a taskbar button for the snapped app, you will see its group.

The window snapping feature allows the user to resize and re-arrange open windows and apps in the screen. In order to improve it, Microsoft has added a descriptive flyout that allows to quickly rearrange open apps using one of the four templates.

Windows 11 Snap Layouts

Those include:

  • windows arranged in two equal areas.
  • two windows side-by-side, having the left window wider than the right one.
  • a huge window on the left and two vertically arranged windows on the right side.
  • an equal-sized grid of four windows.
  • and two more.

Snap layouts will automatically appear when you hover over a window's maximize button. Snapped windows in Window 11 are called a Snap Groups.

Snap Groups is a collection of windows arranged in a group that you can quickly pull back together on the screen with a single click after switching to another application.

In the current stable version of Windows 11, Snap Groups don't appear in any special style when you switch between the apps, or hover over an app in the taskbar.

Luckily, this has changed in the latest Dev build. Besides the Snap improvements, there are also a number of File Explorer additions. You can now group files and folders by the total size. Also, the full context menus now appear with a new look.

  1. Taskbar previews are one of the first thing I disable as they slow me down. Extremely idiotic feature since the stupid idea about combining buttons and increasing the number of clicks.
