Windows 11 Build 23580 (Dev) enables Copilot for local accounts

Here's a new Dev channel release, Windows 11 Build 23580. It updates Microsoft Store, enables Copilot for local accounts, and improves nearby share.

What's new in Windows 11 Build 23580 (Dev)

Microsoft Store Update

A new version of the Microsoft Store version 22310.xxxx.x has become available to Windows 11 insiders on the Dev and Canary channels. The update brings with it the following improvements.

Game Installation Options

Setting the location for installing games. When downloading games such as Starfield, Halo Infinite or Forza Motorsport, you can now specify the hard drive on which to install the game. For example, when you click the “Install” button on the Starfield page, a dialog box will appear asking you to select the installation location. You can change the default drive and folder location in Microsoft Store settings. These settings sync with the Xbox app on PC.

Changes and improvements

Copilot for Windows

Starting with Dev channel build 23580, users with local accounts will be able to use Copilot for Windows. But the number of requests will be limited. To remove restrictions, you must sign in with your Microsoft account.

Nearby Share

Significantly increased data transfer speed between devices nearby within the same network. Whereas previously users had to be on the same private network, now they can be on both a public and private network. You can enable sharing with nearby devices in the Quick Actions menu on the taskbar, right-click on the local file, select Share and in the window that appears, select the device from the Nearby Share list.

Fixes

File Explorer

  • Fixed an issue where the Back and Forward mouse buttons would not work when hovering over the Featured section on the File Explorer home page.
  • Fixed an issue where the Gallery page would not display correctly when grouping was applied to all folders.

Desktop

  • Fixed an issue where the text on desktop tooltips in Task View was difficult to read in contrasting themes.
  • Fixed an issue where icons on the taskbar would disappear after switching desktops.

Search on the taskbar

Fixed an issue where clicking the search field would open and immediately close the Search window if the taskbar was almost completely filled with icons.

Windows Spotlight

Fixed an issue where Windows Spotlight wallpapers were not displayed correctly in the desktop preview in Task View.

Note. Some of the fixes listed above may be included in cumulative updates for release versions of Windows 11.

Known Issues

  • Taskbar:
    • [New] The purple Chat button may reappear on the taskbar after updating to this build. This is unintentional behavior. Engineers are working to fix the problem.
  • Copilot for Windows:
    • When you first launch or after updating Copilot, when using Voice Control, you must use the Show grid command to then move to the Ask me anything box.
