VLC stable is finally available for Android

VLC, one of the best cross platform open source media players which supports all popular formats without codecs, is finally available as a stable release for Android. So, now VLC supports Windows, Windows Phone, Linux, Mac OS X, iOS and Android. VLC is the only media player app I use on my PCs. Let's take a closer look at its Android version.

The stable version of VLC is 1.0.1 and available at

Note that Google Play still has the beta version available for install, so be careful when you install it.

VLC for Android can also handle all popular formats and has built-in codecs, so you don't need any additional software installed on your phone.

The release version requires the following permissions from your Android OS:
Network Communication
Full Internet access [INTERNET]
Allows an application to create network sockets.

Phone Calls
Read phone state and identity [READ_PHONE_STATE]
Allows the application to access the phone features of the device. An application with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to etc.

Modify/delete USB storage contents [WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE]
Allows an application to write to the USB storage.

Control vibrator [VIBRATE]
Allows the application to control the vibrator.

Prevent tablet from sleeping [WAKE_LOCK]
Allows an application to prevent the tablet from going to sleep.

Change your audio settings [MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS]
Allows application to modify global audio settings such as volume and routing.

System Tools
Modify global system settings [WRITE_SETTINGS]
Allows an application to modify the system's settings data. Malicious applications can corrupt your system's configuration.

Development Tools
Read sensitive log data [READ_LOGS]
Allows an application to read from the system's various log files. This allows it to discover general information about what you are doing with the tablet, potentially including personal or private information.

VLC for Android comes with source code and has no ads. It is a clean and safe app. I am going to switch from MX Player to VLC. What about you?
