Telegram messenger has updated its advertising platform and now collects the IP addresses of non-premium users for targeted advertising purposes. This allows advertisers to display ads in specific countries and cities.
However, Telegram ensures that no other geolocation data is collected or utilized. The collection of IP addresses helps to avoid displaying ads in certain countries or territories.
In a press release, Telegram explained that this would avoid showing ads in certain countries or territories — for example, if advertisers want to run a Russian-language ad but require it not to be displayed in Russia.
Additionally, advertisers can provide an anonymous list of encrypted identifiers based on phone numbers. The list will allow targeting specific audiences without using the actual numbers. These changes only apply to non-Premium users. Telegram states that they do not collect this data from premium users.
