Telegram introduces new message auto-delete, widgets, and more

After introducing the ability to move chats from WhatsApp, Line, and KakaoTalk, Telegram developers are back with another major update for the popular messenger. This time, a new version focuses on disappearing messages, new invitation links, and home screen widgets.

Message auto-delete

With the latest update for Telegram on iOS and Android, users can now set a self-destruct timer for a message in all chats, not only Secret Chats. The auto-delete timer allows choosing a period between 24 hours and 7 days after sending.

When the time is out (timer starts after a message is sent, not read), a message disappears for all users in the selected chat. It is important to note that Telegram developers recently fixed a serious security bug that caused a macOS client to keep disappearing media from the Secret Chats in the local folder.

Home screen widgets

Also, there are two home screen widgets to keep your favorite chats quickly accessible. The first widget shows selected conversations with the latest message preview and unread messages counter. The second one shows only names and profile images. Widgets are available for both Android and iOS (14 and newer), but on the latter they occasionally refresh due to system limitations. On Android, widgets are always up to date and support custom sizes.

Expiring invite links

In addition to self-destruct messages, the new version brings expiring invite links. Group administrators can set the link expiration time and/or limit the number of uses.

You can also share an invite link via a QR code.

Other improvements

Other improvements in this new version include groups with unlimited members (in such a group, only administrators can send messages) and improved chat import. Imported messages now sort by the original date in the new Telegram chats or chats with fewer than 1000 messages. Also, an improved report system allows reporting specific messages and adding a comment to provide more context about the issue. And, of course, no Telegram update without a new set of animated emojis. There are 23 new emojis at glorious 60 FPS.
