The October 2021 firmware update for the third-gen Surface Book improves thermal management when the computer works with an external monitor. It also addresses critical security vulnerabilities (Intel Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) and enhances the overall system stability. Finally, Microsoft says the update "enables Windows 11 feature" without specifying details. It might be related to Windows 11-specific battery optimizations Surface Pro 7 recently received.

You can install the update on all Surface Book 3 configurations running Windows 10 1903 (May 2019 Update) or newer. Keep in mind that you cannot uninstall firmware updates on Surface devices. As for known issues, Microsoft says the October 2021 firmware update for Surface Book 3 has none.
According to the official documentation, Microsoft plans to support Surface Book 3 until May 26, 2024, exactly four years after the launch. Note that this applies just to firmware updates as Windows 10 and 11 have dedicated lifecycle policies.
