Study: Windows 10 end of support will lead to a flood of electronic waste

A research study has indicated that the end of Windows 10's lifecycle will lead to a surge in e-waste. Analysts from Canalys have estimated that around 240 million PCs worldwide will be dumped into landfills due to the switch to Windows 11. This has raised concerns about the responsibility of vendors to prolong the lifespan of devices.

Furthermore, Canalys has criticized Microsoft for its current device compatibility practices with Windows 11. The minimum system requirements for the new operating system include a strict processor list and a TPM. Analysts have warned that many devices reaching the end of their Windows 10 lifecycle will not meet these requirements, despite being in good condition.

ℹ️ It is important to note that Windows 10 service will cease in the autumn of 2025.

As a consequence, up to 240 million devices are predicted to end up in landfills, causing significant environmental impact from mass electronic recycling. Canalys emphasizes the need for suppliers to focus more on supporting closed-loop production.

In addition, Canalys has warned that the transition to Windows 11 in the coming years will put significant strain on the IT budgets of organizations already attempting to reduce costs in the midst of an economic crisis.
