PowerToys 0.62 comes with new tools, Screen Ruler, Quick Accent, and Text Extractor

Microsoft today released a new version 0.62 of their famous PowerToys app set. Besides regular fixes and general improvements, the update includes three brand new tools. If you are reading Winaero, you may be already familiar with them.

New tools

  • Screen Ruler allows measuring the distance in pixels between controls and, app windows, and on-screen elements. It can walk through the user interface objects of any app, and accurately detects all the padding and margins. It supports 4 different selection modes which you can learn about in this post.
  • Text Extractor allow easily fetching text from images. Earlier known as "PowerOCR", it allows selecting any screen part, OCR the text data and put the result into the clipboard.
  • Quick Accent is a new tool to help you write letters with accents.

Besides, the PowerRun tool has received a new plugin to search through in past query results.

It is worth noting that version 0.62 has a few known issues, so check them carefully.

Known issues

  • The Text Extractor utility fails to recognize text in some cases on ARM64 devices running Windows 10.
  • After installing PowerToys, the new Windows 11 context menu entries for PowerRename and Image Resizer might not appear before a system restart.
  • There are reports of users who are unable to open the Settings window. This is being caused by incompatibilities with some applications (RTSS RivaTuner Statistics Server and MSI AfterBurner are known examples of this). If you're affected by this, please check the linked issue to verify if any of the presented solutions works for you.

Finally, there are a number of fixes and improvements included in today's PowerToys update. Microsoft has resolved sereval issues with FancyZones, PowerRename, and File Explorer add-ons. The latter has got a useful option to format JSON and XML files before rendering.

Besides the new history search plugin, PowerToys Run now supports port numbers in the URI plugin, the default TimeDate activation keyword is now ")". Also, its Unit Converter plugin now supports plural units, and the Calculator plugin features improved validation logic.
