Yesterday Microsoft made the final version of PowerShell 7.1 available for download. Today the company published it on Microsoft Store, and also officially announced it in the blog.

PowerShell 7.1 is now available for all supported platforms, including Windows, Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Alpine, and macOS. It is the first release of PowerShell that is available through the Microsoft Store.

Actually, PowerShell 7.1 is a minor release that only adds improvements and resolves issues of the previous version of the platform.

For PowerShell 7.1, we decided to build on the foundation established in PowerShell 7.0 with a strong focus on community issues, especially where we could make additive changes and quality-of-life improvements without introducing instability or breaking changes. As a platform with over 115 million sessions per month, we're absolutely committed to ensuring that PowerShell remains a stable and performant platform, even after significant version upgrades like 7.1.

Changes made to the PowerShell 7.1 include

  • PowerShellGet 3.0
  • Secret Management Module, an extensible abstraction layer in PowerShell for interacting with Secrets and Secrets Vaults, will get Linux support.
  • PSScriptAnalyzer 2.0 for better user experience with VSCode-PowerShell and PSEditorServices.
  • Improvements made to PowerShell Jupyter Kernel
  • Improvements made to platyPS vNext, a PowerShell module that devs currently use to convert PowerShell documentation from markdown to updatable-help.
