In this article, we'll see how to pin Regedit to the Start menu in Windows 10 or any such programs which do not have a shortcut in the Start menu. This trivial procedure is made more difficult in Windows 10 and you may find that you cannot easily pin it in the latest version of the OS. Let's see what's the problem.
In previous Windows versions like Windows 7, there was no issue with pinning Regedit to the Start menu. You could just type Regedit.exe in the search box of the Start menu, right-click the search result and select Pin to Start menu from the context menu.
But not so in Windows 10.
In Windows 10, the Start menu had been completely redesigned. Now, it is a Modern app, which combines some features of the classic menu with the Start screen introduced in Windows 8. It allows browsing for installed apps along with Live Tiles and Tile Groups on the right.
The Start menu in Windows 10 lacks its own Search feature. Instead, it is integrated with Cortana, the built-in digital assistant. It provides a search box in the taskbar which is supposed to replace the Start menu search feature. Even if you disable the search box in the taskbar, you can use Cortana to search through the Start menu by opening it and typing what you want.
Now, let's see what happens when you search for Regedit with Cortana. The app appears in the search results, as expected:
However, there is no "Pin to Start" option in the context menu!
This can confuse the user and make him think that the OS does not support this. Here is a workaround.
To pin Regedit to the Start Menu in Windows 10, do the following.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to the folder C:\Windows.
- Right-click the regedit.exe file and select Pin to Start in the context menu.
You are done. The Regedit app will now be pinned to the Start menu.
There is another method to do the same. Some users might find it faster or more useful. It involves the taskbar context menu.
Pin Regedit to Start Menu from the taskbar
- Run regedit.exe.
- Right-click the Regedit button on the taskbar to open the jump list.
- Now press and hold the Shift key and right-click the topmost "Registry Editor" item in the jump list without letting go of the Shift key.
- Now you will see the Pin to Start command. Click it to pin the app to the Start menu.
