Panos Panay reveals that AI features will soon enhance Windows 11 and Windows 12

Microsof's EVP & Chief Product Officer Panos Panay during his session at AMD's CES 2023 mentioned significant changes coming to the next generation of operating system from Redmond. When discussing AI features in the latest AMD chips, he pointed that the new software will heavily use AI and how hardware solutions will help it.

When speaking about Ryzen 7040 series hardware, Mr. Panay stated the following.

AI is the defining technology of our time, it's like nothing I have ever seen before. It's transforming industries, it's improving our daily lives on many ways - some of it you see, some of it you don't see -, and we are right now right this moment at an inflexion point. This is where computing from the cloud to the edge is becoming more and more intelligent, more personal, and it's all done by harnessing the power of AI.

.. now AMD is also at the forefront of AI technology, with Ryzen 7040 series, alongside Windows 11. It is our next step in this journey together

After that, he sheds some light on how AI will be used in the forthcoming Windows releases. While AI is already integrated in the OS here and there, e.g. in the Photos app, more to come. Microsoft relies on this technology, so it will be deeply integrated in next Windows 11 versions, with Windows 12 having more online/cloud components heavily powered by AI.

AI is going to reinvent how you do everything on Windows, quite literally. Like these large generative models, think language models, code gen models, image models; these models are so powerful, so delightful, so useful, personal. But they are also very compute intensive, and so we haven't been able to do this before. We have never seen these intense workloads at this scale before, and they're right here. It's gonna need an operating system that blurs the line between cloud and edge, and that's what we are doing right now

This way, Windows 12 may have a requirement for a special AI support by hardware. Microsoft is actively investing to OpenAI project and is working to supercharge Bing with ChatGPT, a natural language processing tool that uses AI. It can make Bing more user friendly, and polish its search results with extra relevancy.
