Outlook Lite for Android released, as small as only 5 MB

Microsoft has released Outlook Lite for Android. The new app is now available in select countries. It is intended to be light on resource consumption, and comes with the basic functionality only. The app size is only 5 MB, while the regular Outlook app is at about 88 MB. This way, the Outlook Lite shows decent performance on budget Android devices.

At the moment of this writing, Outlook Lite is only available in the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Mexico, Peru, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Venezuela. Microsoft aims to test it on the markets that have many low-cost devices. This will allow the company to extend its presence in these regions in mobile segment without making users work with a full featured heavy client app.

What's new in Outlook Lite for Android

Here are the services it supports:

  • Outlook.com
  • Hotmail
  • MSN Live
  • Microsoft 365
  • Microsoft Exchange Online
  • Microsoft Calendar and Contacts

It is less than the number of services that supports the "full" Outlook app. The latter can handle Microsoft Exchange Server, GMail, Yahoo! Mail. It also includes integration with OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, Dropbox, Google Drive and Box. None of these service available in the Lite edition of Outlook.

By removing the mentioning services, Microsoft managed to get the app 18 times smaller than the full Outlook for Android app. It can run on devices with just one GB or RAM. Also, it is very light on battery power.

The app is available on Google Play via this official link. However, if you are visiting it from a country that the app wasn't officially released in, it won't be available to you. To access it, you need to use a VPN. Alternatively, you can download it from APKMirror and sideload the apk file. The app itself doesn't have any regional restriction.
