Microsoft’s Home Hub for Windows 10 Devices

Microsoft is building a new feature for Windows 10 Creators Update known as "Home Hub". Once enabled on a Windows 10 device, Home Hub will turn it into a device which can function similarly to Amazon's Echo product. Let's see what Microsoft's Home Hub is.

Allegedly, the Home Hub allows users to create a special family account, which extends traditional user accounts in Windows or the guest account which we are familiar with. Using the family account, you will be able to access a number of features without signing in to your individual account. Things like calendar appointments, to-do lists, shopping lists, specific apps can be shared with the family and accessed quickly from individual devices thanks to the new family account feature.

There will be a new Welcome Screen, which aggregates information from "family" sources. The Welcome Screen of the Home Hub is the central dashboard for the entire Home Hub experience. The digital assistant "Cortana" will always be enabled and will be accessible directly from that screen. Like Amazon's Echo, you will be able to interact with Cortana using voice in the Home Hub.

The screenshot above demonstrates a new logo for Cortana with an orange circle, indicating that a family account is being used instead of the individual user account. Internally, this is being called "FamTana", a special family-friendly version of Cortana.

The main usage scenario for the Home Hub feature is a living room all-in-one PC. OEMs will be able to build special devices to run Home Hub.

It is not known when Home Hub will be released. It is planned to be released in 3 waves in Redstone 2 (Creators Update), Redstone 3 and Redstone 4 feature updates to Windows 10. The Creators Update is expected to arrive early in Spring 2017 or Summer 2017, the Redstone 3 update is coming in late 2017 and Redstone 4 will be coming in early 2018.
