Microsoft will move its cloud services to a single cloud.microsoft domain

Less than a year ago, Microsoft announced its intention to consolidate domains, and it has now reiterated to developers that a unified domain for Cloud.microsoft cloud services will be launched in June 2024.

As outlined in the company's blog, the web applications for Teams, Outlook, and Microsoft 365 will be integrated under the Cloud.microsoft domain as early as June of this year. Currently, these applications employ the domains Outlook.office.com, Teams.microsoft.com, and microsoft365.com. Users with non-updated apps will continue to utilize Teams.microsoft.

Microsoft has emphasized that this transition aims to streamline the user experience by reducing the number of authorization steps, redirects, and delays when switching between applications, in addition to enhancing security. The company has clarified that it does not intend to completely phase out microsoft.com, as it plans to utilize it for marketing, sales, and technical support purposes.

Regarding the transition, Microsoft stated, “Initially, only new services will be deployed on the cloud.microsoft domain. Existing workloads need to be taken into account, so the transition will occur at a slower pace.”

Despite the launch of Teams.cloud.microsoft, Teams.microsoft.com will remain operational in June 2024. In instructions for updating x-frame/CSP headers to include new domains, Microsoft noted that to ensure your app continues to work on existing and future Microsoft 365 hosts, make sure *.cloud.microsoft is allowed. Additionally, updating to version 2.19 or later of the TeamsJS client library, which includes a dynamic list of trusted domains, will be necessary.
