Microsoft Store now offers links to direct app installers

Microsoft's Rudy Huyn has announced a huge change that comes to the web version of Microsoft Store. It will now offer direct links to lightweight online installers instead of launching the Store app when installing an app.  The online installers are small executable files that will run much faster and consume less resources than the full-featured Store.

Prior to this change, installing the app required you to click the "Get" button on the website. Then you had to confirm the opening of a link in the Microsoft Store, waiting for the store to launch, and clicking on the "Install" button again in the Microsoft Store window. While it was a secure solution, it was not that useful for the end user.

Current Setup Process

The advantage of online installers is that they are faster than the Microsoft Store app. They are also fetch up-to-date application files directly on computers that have no Store app installer. They include a downloader for that. Moreover, the online installer allows you to install multiple applications on your device at once!

The collected feedback shows that both developers and end users welcome the change. Feedback from developers and users who took part in the first three stages of the experiment was overwhelmingly positive, and the results clearly demonstrate this. The new method of installing Store apps resulted in an average 12% increase in installs and a 54% increase in app launches after installation.

Finally, developers can now customize the behavior of the “Get it from Microsoft” button in their projects. It can either download an online app installer or redirect the user to the Microsoft Store.
